For a long time demography took a temporal view, as well historical as individual, of studied phenomena, letting aside their
spatial aspect. As far back as 1968, I began to study spatial mobility and its relationship with the living space, using a
synthetic space-time approach, necessary to study these phenomena
Temporal aspects
A theoretical study, using
observed data, leads to the
model migrants-migrations,
elaborated from a detailed study
of spatial mobility in different
countries. It gives a general
framework of spatial mobility as
an evolving process through
time and space
Its estimated parameters permit a comparison of migrants measured
during different periods of time, in different countries. They also
permit a comparison of different measurement of the phenomenon:
migration (event measured by a population register), migrant
(individual measured by a census question on place of residence at a
previous time), latest migration (event–individual), and gives an
overall picture of spatial mobility in a country based on the data used.
This approach led to a number of works made by students: Larry Long, John Long, Beryl Nicholson, Thomas Le Jeannic,
Brigitte Baccaïni, Jacques Ledent, etc..
This model has been re-examined recently wit more detailed and later data. Jean-François Royer in 2009, for example
concludes his study by saying: his (Courgeau, 1973) results stand up remarkably well and his conclusions are largely
confirmed. Nathalie Donzeau and Jean-Louis Pan Ké Shon in 2009 showed that only by adopting the question ‘where were you
living a year ago’ at the census, it is possible to conduct robust investigation on sub-populations. This question was finally
adopted for the 2011 census in France.
